Elsewhere's 2018 Rural Residency: Elsewhere Goes To Madison was a curated, off-site residency session that engaged artists and citizens through interactive, socially engaged works produced for the "Madison Music Fest," celebrating the town’s Bicentennial. This inaugural program invited national and local artists to stay and work at the Reckon Holler residency site in Rockingham County, North Carolina, for 10 days, and celebrate rural culture, bring visibility to local narratives, and deepen connectivity through collaborative artworks. Part of the Southern Constellations (SoCo) curatorial initiative, this residency serves as an incubator for the collaborative production of critical artwork that explores rural life in underserved areas of NC, and supports Elsewhere’s mission to expand experimental art practices and dialogues across the South.

Reckon Holler
Reckon Holler has hosted an eclectic family of gardeners, mechanics, artists, thinkers, tinkerers, and talkers on an old tobacco farm since the mid 1900s. They call their house Reckon Holler, as it is a great place to hash out new ideas or share an old story.Over the course of 10 days, Reckon Holler hosted the artists-in-residence and project organizers in this convergence to create new work. The family led walks around the land, introduced artists to neighbors, supported project production, made delicious homemade meals with local garden ingredients, and invited everyone to lie under the stars.

Box Tire Mobile
For the town's Bicentennial, organizers Ian Gamble (residency curator) and Jay Gamble (studio assistant) invited the 5 visiting artists to utilize and display their work inside of Box Tire Mobile: a renovated 35-foot bus (below) that lives at Reckon Holler. The Town of Madison and the Madison Merchants Guild hosted the festival to honor and celebrate the town's 200th Anniversary. This all-day event included live music, food and craft vendors, fun for all ages, and Old Time demonstrations, games, and activities.
